01.Driver's license for domestic use in Japan

Please present your driver's license issued by the Public Safety Commission of Japan, if you have one.

02.International Driver's License
(issued in accordance with the Geneva Convention (1949))

Passport of your country + international driver's license is required.

• The international driver's license is valid for one year from the date of issue and valid for driving in Japan for one year from the date of entry into Japan. (This can be confirmed by the stamp of the date of entry into Japan on your passport.)
• If you use the automated gate for entry and exit, your passport will not be stamped (imprinted). A stamp (seal) is required to use a rental car. After passing through the automated gate, please have your stamp (seal) stamped by the examination center staff.
• However, if a person listed in the Basic Resident Registration Register re-enters Japan within 3 months of his/her departure from Japan, the date of re-entry is not considered as the date of landing (the start date of driving status in Japan).
• International driver's licenses obtained from countries that are parties to the Paris Convention (1926), Washington Convention (1943), or Vienna Convention (1968) are not acceptable.
• An international driver's license issued by an agency not authorized to issue international driver's licenses is considered invalid, even if it is located in one of the countries/territories that are parties to the Geneva Convention.
• If the form of the international driver's license differs significantly from the form of the Geneva Convention, the international driver's license will be invalid.

03.Foreign Driver's License and its Japanese translation

If you have a driver's license from Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, Slovenia, or Monaco, you must be able to present your passport with a Japanese translation of that license.

• A Japanese translation of the national driver's license must be issued by the embassy or consulate general in your country or by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).
• For Taiwanese driver's licenses, a Japanese translation of the driver's license issued by JAF, Taiwan Association for Japanese Relations, or Gplus Corporation is required.
• A foreign driver's license is valid for driving in Japan for one year from the date of landing in Japan (confirmed by the entry stamp in the passport showing the date of landing in Japan) or the expiration date of the foreign driver's license, whichever is earlier.
• However, if a person listed in the Basic Resident Registration Register re-enters Japan within 3 months of his/her departure from Japan, the date of re-entry is not considered as the date of landing (the start date of driving status in Japan).
